Darkness comes a-creeping through the fading candlelight
A cold wind haunts the shutters and the hour is getting late and it’s a
Nightmare strange outlandish story I must now relate
A young man on the forest path all on a moonless night
Finds a maiden standing by the roadside all in white
“Lady are you troubled? Has some villain done you wrong?”
“No sir I am listening to the ancient shadow song”
With these words the young man felt a growing nameless dread
To see this pale maiden as she lifted up her head
“Can you hear the music sir? It has me quite undone
This strange and ghostly air you hear it is the shadow song
"Yes I hear the music lady, hear it all too well
I fear it is no earthly tune, it is some midnight spell"
With this they took to dancing both the mortal and the maid
