At the Turning of the Tide

about

This song was the opening number in a play by the Crude Apache Theatre Company from Norwich and with whom I have done lots of stuff over the years. The show itself was about the Norfolk Wherries and tracked one particular Wherry family as the industry declined in the second half of the nineteenth century. The Punch House Band provided the music for the show

lyrics

AT THE TURNING OF THE TIDE

All you folk who work the river
To earn you daily bread
All you watermen and wherry rats
Who tarry in your beds
Rise up the dawn is breaking.
And along the riverside
It’s time to go to work lads
At the turning of the tide

CHORUS
The turning of the tide
With the turning of the tide
It’s time to go to work lads
At the turning of the tide

Make ready all your warehousemen
Your barrels and your crates
Your stacks and sacks and hogsheads
All your river freight
Before the hour is up we’ll see
Black sails against the sky
It’s time to go to work lads
With the turning of the tide

CHORUS

Oats and rope and brandy
Timber tar and bricks
Coal and cloth and good strong ale
Silk and salted fish
It all must be unloaded
Haul it up and stack it high
It’s time to go to work lads
With the turning of the tide

CHORUS
